Assistive Screening Technology at the Marquee
The Marquee Theater at Union South has added assistive technology in our facility, designed to provide accommodations to screening attendees with a hearing and/or vision disability wherever screening content allows.
Assistive Listening Devices
For screenings being projected through our DCP projection system, we have two pairs of USL IRH-280 headphones that feature independent volume control on each side, a 3.5mm jack to drive neck loops or direct audio inputs on hearing aids and implants, and DC & AC magnetic fields to drive automatic switching telecoils in hearing aids.
- This equipment will work to provide volume amplification of all content projected through our DCP projection system, both DCP and disc-based content.
- This equipment will work to provide a Hearing Impaired (HI) audio track designed to enhance clarity of dialogue when a DCP-based film screening file contains this content. Not all film screening content comes with HI capabilities. Typically only the feature itself will have VI, but not trailers or commercials.
- This equipment will work to provide Visually Impaired Narration (VI-N) content when a DCP-based film screening file contains this content. Not all film screening content comes with VI-N capabilities. Typically only the feature itself will have VI, but not trailers or commercials.
For events with 35mm projection, content coming through the non-DCP projector, or lecture content coming through a house system microphone, alternate Assistive Listening Devices are available to provide volume amplification.
Closed Caption Displays
We have four USL CCR-100 Closed Caption Devices that feature an angled flex-arm with a base and built in cupholder that fits into the Marquee cup holders.
- This equipment will work to provide Closed Caption (CCAP) content for DCP-based films when the screening file contains this content. Not all film screening content comes with closed caption capabilities. Typically only the feature itself will have closed captions, but not trailers or commercials.
Open Captions for DCP Screenings
If a DCP-based film has an Open Caption (OCAP) version available, we will offer a dedicated Open Caption screening of the title. If we are only offering a single screening of a title and OCAP is available, that screening will feature Open Captions.
Open Captions for BluRay and DVD Screenings
If the screening disc contains subtitles, we will offer a dedicated Open Caption screening of the title using the subtitle track. If we are only offering a single screening of a title and a subtitle track is available, the screening will feature Open Captions. If we are screening a disc-based title more than once, the subtitle feature can also be activated (if present on the disc) by the projectionist to display as Open Captions as long as we receive a request in advance of the screening start. Note that films screened from BluRays and DVDs will not contain HI, VI-N, or closed caption capabilities.
Assistive Content Availability?
As mentioned above, the availability of assistive technology is dependent upon film screening content and format. Not all titles are encoded with closed captions, open captions, and/or audio descriptions. This page will be updated regularly as we confirm assistive options available for each screening. For non-WUD Film events in the Marquee Theater, please contact the presenting organization for information on available assistive options.
How to Request Assistive Screening Technology at an Event
Patrons can request assistive devices from the projectionist upon arrival for a screening. Devices will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. To request English subtitle open captions at a BluRay/DVD screening not already designated as an Open Caption screening, please contact the projectionist in the projection booth 30 minutes before screening time so they may cue them up.
