Behind the Scenes of the Wisconsin Union Theater

The green room. Every venue in show business has one. It's a place for performers to relax before, during and after a show and the energy varies, depending on which artist walks through the door: Excited, nervous, calm. We welcome you to join us and take a look at what goes on behind the scenes look at the theater. Welcome to the green room!

Imagine you’ve just read the program for "Metamorphosis" and can’t wait to see the words come alive. As the lights turn off one by one, and you get cozy in your seat with anticipation, five artists stroll onto the stage. They slowly pick up their mallets, you hear the sweet tone of the vibraphone, and soon your ears are absorbed in the diverse blend of instruments that Third Coast Percussion (TCP) wields into something magical.

The 2021-2022 Wisconsin Union Theater season has been a breath of fresh air as we’ve delightfully welcomed audiences back into our beautiful theater spaces for a wide range of performances, from Vijay Iyer’s jazz concert to Gil Shaham’s classical violin performance. We sat down with Wisconsin Union Theater Director Elizabeth Snodgrass to learn more about this season and what the theater team is planning for the future.

We are currently over halfway through the 2021-2022 season. What have been some highlights so far?

“The People’s Diva” Renée Fleming is the definition of a triple threat: not only is she one of the most accomplished opera singers in the world, she is also an advocate for music therapy and a trailblazing leader in the music industry. In April, Renée will visit Memorial Union for three incredible events that you will not want to miss.

Before select shows at the Wisconsin Union Theater, we invite you to join fellow theater-goers for a drink in Memorial Union’s Shannon Sunset Lounge. Located just outside the main entrance of Shannon Hall, the Lounge offers comfortable seating, a cozy fireplace, and a stunning view of Lake Mendota, making it the perfect place to start your evening at the theater.

Founded in 2019, the Black Arts Matter (BAM) Festival is an interdisciplinary arts festival dedicated to building community around Black artistry. Festival Founder and Artistic Director Shasparay started the festival while studying at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree with a major in theater and a minor in African American studies. She is also an accomplished performance artist who ranked the 10th best slam poet in the world in the 2018 Individual World Poetry Slam Competition.
