What does the world look like to you? How is that shaped by where you come from? These questions shaped “Metamorphosis,” a program that Third Coast Percussion (TCP) and Movement Art Is are presenting on January 27, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mead Witter Foundation Concert Hall at the Hamel Music Center
“Metamorphosis” wholly blends the worlds of contemporary percussion and movement.
The New York Times said, “[Third Coast Percussion] play as if they’re a single, eight-armed organism.”
And The Atlantic said, “Movement Art Is advocates for social change while expressing how vital dance can be.”
When it comes to creating this program, which comes first, the music or the choreography? The chicken or the egg? Movement Art Is co-founders Lil Buck and Jon Boogz explain that first and foremost is the story; the feeling. Then, it can go either way from there. Sometimes, the choreographers were presented with an excerpt of music, and it is up to them to translate the sound into movement. Other times, the choreographers explained an emotion or showed a progression to TCP, and the music is formed from there. Either way, the partnership is conceived from human emotions.
“This project on every level is about the way that our interactions with others transform the work that we do,” said TCP member Rob Dillion.
A further way to interpret the duality of human nature is between the portrayal of the characters Marcus and Miles. Marcus, a wise being, has experienced immense joy and harsh pain. He is on a path to uncovering what it means to accept both. Meanwhile, Marcus is discovering how to use his new Frankenstein-esque body. Experience this show live to watch how the dancers interact at these acutely different stages in life, and what effect they have on each other.
Tickets are available for the Jan. 27, 2022, Wisconsin Union Theater-hosted performance here.
