The Wisconsin Union’s Winter Carnival will return Feb. 3-7 with new events to help attendees enjoy the outdoors during Wisconsin’s winter season while practicing physical distancing and other public health guidance related to COVID-19.
The Wisconsin Union team invites all, including UW-Madison students, staff and faculty, Wisconsin Union members, and guests, to experience the Carnival. Some events and activities require pre-registration and have limited capacities.
The Wisconsin Union Theater’s new, online, pilot event series, called Wisconsin Sound, will exclusively feature Wisconsin artists, beginning with the virtual streaming of a concert by the Willy Street Chamber Players (WSCP) on Jan. 24 at noon CDT.
The Wisconsin Union Theater’s Concert Series will continue with a performance by the Verona Quartet on Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. CDT, which will be preceded by a question-and-answer session with the Quartet at 7 p.m. CDT.
The Quartet will perform String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 51, No. 2 by Johannes Brahms and String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 “American” by Antonín Dvořák.
The Verona Quartet rose to international fame by sweeping top prizes at competitions, including the Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award in 2020.
The Wisconsin Union Theater’s fall virtual events will continue with a live performance by the Christian Sands Trio on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. CDT, which will be preceded by a live Q&A at 7:30 p.m. CDT, and a performance by pianist Jeremy Denk on Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. CDT, which will be preceded by a live Q&A at 7 p.m. CDT.
Student-led committee will host discussion with renowned filmmaker, activist on Nov. 12
Award-winning filmmaker Shalini Kantayya will discuss whether technology can be neutral, racial bias in technology, and what happens to human rights when machines encroach on social systems at a free, virtual event hosted by the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) Committee on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
The Wisconsin Union team has made affordable, gourmet Thanksgiving To Go meals available for purchase this year, with ordering available now through Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. CDT and pick-up on Nov. 25.
This year’s menu options include bourbon roasted turkey; gingersnap mustard glazed ham; sage stuffing; mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows; housemade cranberry orange relish; and pumpkin, pecan or fudge bottom pie. Customers can purchase these items à la carte or as a personal-size or family-size meal.
The Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) Committee in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, will host a live, virtual conversation with victims’ rights advocates Sarah Deer, J.D., and Bonnie Clairmont on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. CDT.
The discussion will address land acknowledgments, colonial gender-based violence in a university setting defined by ongoing settler colonial occupation, and developing best practices for students and faculty who are working to fight these issues.
The Black Arts Matter (BAM) Festival will return to raise up Black voices and art virtually Nov. 5, 12 and 19 with three events curated and co-produced by interdisciplinary artist, slam poet and UW-Madison alumna Shasparay Irvin ‘20 and the Wisconsin Union Theater.

The Wisconsin Union Theater’s fall virtual Concert Series performances will begin on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. CDT with a performance from Paris by Camille Thomas, featuring music by Claude Debussy, Nadia Boulanger, Maurice Ravel and Frédéric Chopin, and a live Q&A with Thomas and pianist Julien Brocal on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. CDT.
