The Wisconsin Union Theater (WUT) is working with True Endeavors to welcome Grammy-nominated American roots trio The Wood Brothers to Shannon Hall at Memorial Union on Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. as part of the band’s Puff of Smoke Tour.
Composed of brothers Chris, upright bass, and Oliver Wood, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, The Wood Brothers is widely regarded as one of roots music’s most inventive and revered acts. Known for its lyrical wit and genre-blending sound, the group has earned a devoted following over the course of nine studio albums.
Its upcoming performance in Madison follows the Aug. 1 release of its album “Puff of Smoke.” The new record features 11 original tracks that reflect the band’s signature blend of heartfelt songwriting and creative musicianship. The group blends folk, blues, gospel, jazz, and funk, creating a sound that’s soulful and grounded in Americana traditions. The Wood Brothers infuses storytelling and insight into the human condition into its compositions, telling stories about everything from the messiness of life to life’s joys.
“The Wood Brothers has a way of making deeply personal music feel universal,” Wisconsin Union Theater Director Elizabeth Snodgrass said. “Its blending of genres, such as roots and blues, creates musical storytelling that is timeless and yet unique.”
As part of its tour, The Wood Brothers has partnered with American Friends of Canadian Conservation. For every ticket sold, $1 will support The Nature Trust of British Columbia’s efforts to protect ecologically rich wetlands from development. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will match each $1 donation with an additional $2 to further wetland conservation work.
Tickets for the Nov. 14 show go on sale June 20 at 10 a.m. and will be available online, by phone at (608) 265-2787, or in person at the Memorial Union Box Office.
