Community invited to Veterans Day recognition breakfast on Nov. 11 at Memorial Union

The Wisconsin Union team, in partnership with University Veteran Services at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, invite UW–Madison students, staff and faculty and the public to celebrate United States veterans and service members at a Veterans Day recognition breakfast on Nov. 11 at Memorial Union and to join the UW–Madison chapter of Student Veterans of America in placing flags on Bascom Hill in honor of veterans.

The celebration takes place from 9-10:30 a.m. in Memorial Union’s Main Lounge. The event will include light refreshments, live music, and a program featuring a presentation of the United States and Wisconsin flags by students in the Army ROTC Badger Battalion Color Guard, a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, as well as remarks by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Lori Reesor, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Wisconsin Union Director Mark Guthier, Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Kathy Still, and University Veteran Services Director and Marine Corps veteran Joe Rasmussen.

The UW–Madison chapter of Student Veterans of America invites all to join its members in placing flags in honor of veterans on Bascom Hill immediately following the Veterans Day recognition breakfast through 4 p.m. or while flag supplies last.

The Wisconsin Union team began hosting an annual Veterans Day event in 2018 and continues to do so today in recognition of UW–Madison service members and veterans.

“Each year, we gather for the important opportunity to thank our country’s service members and to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Guthier said. “Gratitude for and acknowledgment of service members are etched into our entrance at the Wisconsin Union’s Memorial Union.”

The words “Erected and Dedicated to the Memory of the Men and Women of the University of Wisconsin Who Served in our Country’s Wars” are written in stone on the south side of Memorial Union.

The Wisconsin Union team continues to work to remember United States service members with an electronic memorial, called the Gold Star Honor Roll, which includes the names of more than 900 fallen Badger service members. The Union’s electronic Gold Star Honor Roll can be viewed in Memorial Hall at Memorial Union, the Hamel Family Browsing Library at Memorial Union, and online. Fallen UW–Madison alumni service members, who died of service-related causes, can be submitted to the Gold Star Honor Roll here.

Today, the University’s student body includes more than 800 student veterans. University Veterans Services supports military-connected students in many ways, including advising students on the use of military education benefits, assisting with applying for new military education benefits, building community, and providing peer support programs.

The recognition breakfast is made possible with support from the Wisconsin Union and the National Veterans Leadership Foundation.
