German Schumann Quartet, known for its fire and energy, will perform at Memorial Union on Feb. 8

Described as open, curious, and spontaneous, the Schumann Quartet, which has been appointed for residencies at Wigmore Hall and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, will take center stage at the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Shannon Hall in Memorial Union on Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The ensemble will perform the following repertoire:
- Quartet No. 18 in A Major, K. 464 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata” by Leoš Janáček
- Quartet No. 12 in E-flat Major, Op. 127 by Ludwig van Beethoven
The Schumann Quartet includes brothers violinist Erik Schumann, violinist Ken Schumann and cellist Mark Schumann, who have been playing together since early childhood, and violist Veit Hertenstein completes the quartet.
Through honesty and authenticity, the critically acclaimed quartet works to build relationships with the music and the audience before them.
“A work really develops only in a live performance,” the Quartet says. “That is 'the real thing,’ because we, ourselves, never know what will happen. On the stage, all imitation disappears, and you automatically become honest with yourself. Then, you can create a bond with the audience – communicate with it in music.”
Erik Schumann performs using a 1960s violin by Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andrea, Ken Schumann performs with a violin from the mid-18th century, Hertenstein plays a viola created in 1616 by the Amati brothers, and Mark Schumann plays a cello crafted by Giovanni and Francesco Grancino in 1680.
