Posted: 11/04/16

Commander Eileen Collins GPN 2000 001177The Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) committee welcomes astronaut Eileen Collins to speak at Shannon Hall in the Memorial Union on Nov. 14 from 7:30-9:00 p.m.

Collins is a highly accomplished astronaut who is best known for being the first woman to both pilot and command an American spacecraft. Prior to her 16-year NASA career, Collins served as a decorated colonel for the United States Air Force. She has received numerous awards and honors for her achievements, including a place in the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

“DLS is excited to have Eileen Collins, because she has had lived a unique life,” said Ian Simmons, WUD Distinguished Lecture Series associate director of marketing. “She brings experiences most people can only dream of.”

Collins’s lecture will address how she broke down barriers in a male-dominated profession and paved the way for future female astronauts. She will explain how she overcame adversity to achieve her dream of becoming an astronaut.

“We hope guests will take away how they may overcome adversity in their own lives or help others to do so,” Simmons said.

This event is both free and open to the public. Collins’s lecture will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session.

The WUD Distinguished Lecture Series is a student-run committee that contributes to broadening the educational experience of University of Wisconsin-Madison students as well as the Madison community. It is dedicated to bringing smart, engaging and influential people to campus in order to spark thought-provoking conversations and ideas.
