'Art En Route' project begins production

Posted: 07/13/17

Work has begun on the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Art Committee’s “Art En Route” project after final artist selection.

“Art En Route” has paired eight creative writers with eight visual artists to create collaborative works that will be photographed and installed on the exterior wraps of various Madison Metro Transit buses from Oct. 1, 2017, until Jan. 20, 2018.

WUD Art Committee members and Madison art community members chose artists from the greater Dane County to participate in this innovative project.

Chosen artists include Michael Hirshon, Fabu Phillis Carter, Rebecca Kautz, Gwendolyn Rice, Holly Anne Burns, Caleb Weisnicht, Yeonhee Cheong, Antonio Byrd, Beth Racette, Heath Langrek, Jj D'Onofrio, Mackenzie Berry, Johnson Vang, Claude "Bud" Smith, Ryan Haimerl and Brad Foster.

In addition to being installed on area buses, the committee will also display the collaborative works in Gallery 1308 at Union South from Oct. 7 until Nov. 17. An opening reception will be held on Oct. 7 from 2-4 p.m.

“We are extremely excited to not only have these works on moving display throughout all of Madison, but to have them in a gallery where people can come in and see them up close,” said “Art En Route” Project Architect Yusi Liu.

“Art En Route” student leaders, including Project Co-Architects Yusi Liu and Alex Polach, are collaborating with two local non-profit arts organizations, Arts + Literature Laboratory and Madison Community Discourse. These organizations have mentored the student creators of “Art En Route”.

This effort is funded in part by grants from the Wisconsin Union; Madison Arts Commission with additional funds from the Wisconsin Arts Board; the UW-Madison Center for the Humanities HEX-U program; the UW-Madison New Arts Venture Challenge; the Wisconsin Arts Board Creative Communities Grant; and Dane Arts.
