Jason Moran and the Harlem Hellfighters
James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin
Jazz pianist Jason Moran, who is part historian and part magician, takes both icons and forgotten giants of jazz and celebrates their legacy. His latest project focuses on James Reese Europe and the Harlem Hellfighters—groundbreaking musicians and World War I soldiers who laid the path for what would become big band and the hot jazz of the early 20th century. In Moran’s hands, returning to the roots of jazz is not some academic exercise, but rather the foundation for an artistic thought experience sure to open ears and minds.
