Der Rathskeller Dining Room and Subskeller to Close Beginning Feb. 28

Memorial Union's Der Rathskeller dining room and the temporary Subskeller station will close at approximately 6 p.m. Feb. 28, 2016, to allow for ongoing renovations. Der Rathskeller is projected to reopen in fall 2016.
At the adjoining Stiftskeller, Wisconsin Union staff will continue to provide food and beverage services, including hot sandwiches, to Memorial Union guests. Nearby, in the Paul Bunyan Room, The Daily Scoop team will also continue to offer Babcock Dairy ice cream and an assortment of salads, wraps, snacks and beverages.
This closing is part of the larger restoration project known as the Memorial Union Reinvestment (MUR). During MUR, the Wisconsin Union team is preserving and enhancing the iconic Memorial Union, a destination fondly regarded as the living room of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
The Memorial Union’s iconic dining destinations have been preserved and will continue to provide the classic atmosphere visitors have enjoyed for more than 80 years, including the hand-painted characters and wisdom gracing der Rathskeller’s walls.
"We are committed to preserving the places where generations of guests have made memories," said Wisconsin Union Director Mark Guthier. "We look forward to unveiling a more sustainable, more accessible, and even more beautiful Memorial Union."
The local community that enjoys Memorial Union has also served a vital role in the restoration effort. More than 17,000 individuals provided input during the design process through workshops, open forums, committees and surveys.
Funding sources for this project include segregated student fees, private donations and Wisconsin Union operating revenue. Together, these funds are making a real, positive impact on Memorial Union. The Union is a self-supporting organization operating without any tax dollars.
