Offered exclusively for University of Wisconsin-Madison students, the Union’s weekend of celebration kicks off with Sunburst Festival’s free events and activities. This year’s Festival will include the return of silent disco; team trivia; giant lawn games; free, exclusive Union-shirts, while supplies last; food samples; glow-in-the-dark bowling; and more. The Festival’s new activities include a free showing of the film “Black Panther” and a Zen zone, a space dedicated to relaxation that will include aromatherapy and chair massages.

“Sunburst Festival is a chance to unwind and have fun before the school year really begins,” Union President and UW-Madison senior Mills Botham said. “It’s an event that everyone talks about in the fall, and, if you don’t go, you’ll definitely feel like you missed out.”

The next day, the Union’s student programming and leadership board, called the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD), will host SUNSET SLAM, a free welcome back extravaganza on the Memorial Union Terrace.

SUNSET SLAM will feature a DJ, free pizza and soda while supplies last, a performance by Echoes of Camp Randall, sailing, s’mores-making and more. New activities include but are not limited to bicycling-powered smoothie-making and relay races. Students can also follow @WisconsinUnion on Twitter throughout the evening for dining deals for a penny.

“At SUNSET SLAM, students get to experience the types of fun activities the Wisconsin Union Directorate offers and the ways they can help create our programming,” said Brennan Bahr, Wisconsin Union vice president of external relations and a UW-Madison junior. “Plus, there is a chance to win a coveted Terrace chair by completing all of the SUNSET SLAM activities.”

More information about these and other events the Union will hold to welcome students is available at union.wisc.edu/welcome-back-students.
