Combine meditative drawing/coloring/painting and basic weaving techniques to create something totally unexpected!
Supplies Needed:
- Paper (craft paper, drawing paper, watercolor paper, colored cardstock, etc.)
- Scissors
- Something to color with (Paint pens, colored pencils, markers, paint, crayons, etc.)
Optional Supplies
- Glue stick or craft glue
- Heavy paper or board for mounting finished weaving
Instructions:
- Start with two pieces of paper of the same or very similar size. The size of your paper will determine the final size of your weaving. Feel free to trim paper into whatever size you’d like, this example is 6 in x 9 in.
- Color fun designs on each piece of paper using colored pencils, paint pens, markers, paint, crayons, or whatever art supplies you have. The designs do not need to match!
- Decide which piece of paper will be your warp (the vertical pieces that you’ll be weaving into) and which piece of paper will be your weft (the horizontal pieces that you’ll be using to weave over and under the warp). To make the warp, use scissors to cut vertical strips of varying widths, making sure to leave all the strips connected at one end. To make the weft, use scissors to cut horizontal strips of varying widths, this time trimming all the way from one end to the other. Keep the weft pieces in order.
- Begin weaving the weft over and under the warp. If you began the first weft paper strip weaving over the warp, the next weft should start by weaving under. As you weave, gently slide each weft strip up to where the warp strips are still connected.
Optional Additional Steps:
- Once you’ve finished weaving and are happy with the end result, you can use a glue stick or a small dab of craft glue to tack the ends of each weft stirip to the outer warp strips.
- Mount your finished weaving to a larger piece of heavy paper or cardboard using glue or tape to make it reading to display and enjoy!
