Award-winning contemporary choreography by Ronald K. Brown, spoken word artistry on stage Feb. 18 at Memorial Union

Posted: 02/14/24

African dance, contemporary choreography and spoken word will come together during the Feb. 18 performance of award-winning choreography by Ronald K. Brown and dance company EVIDENCE at Memorial Union.

Founded by Brown, EVIDENCE has performed modern dance worldwide for 39 years. In those 39 years, Brown strived to shine a spotlight on the beauty of African forms and rhythms.

His hope is for patrons to see themselves and their experiences reflected on the stage and to identify with the shared experience of emotions that all people experience.

Brown overcame a blood clot-induced stroke in 2021 that left him unable to move most of his left side, and he continued to choreograph and bring his art and the messages behind it to the world. Beginning in the 2nd grade, he knew he wanted to work as a choreographer, with some inspiration coming from a school trip to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater that he calls life-changing.

When asked about the overall message in his work by CBS News, Brown said, "That healing is necessary and possible with work and attention and an open heart."

Patrons can purchase tickets online, at the Memorial Union Box Office, or by calling (608) 265-2787. University of Wisconsin–Madison students, staff and faculty, Wisconsin Union members, and audience members under 18 can purchase discounted tickets.

Patrons can visit the Wisconsin Union Theater website to learn more about the Feb. 18 performance by EVIDENCE of Brown's award-winning choreography.
